Since its formation nearly 100 years ago Lions Club International has focused on sight related projects. Over the years Greenford Lions Club have placed spectacle recycling boxes in opticians, doctors’ surgeries, and other relevant locations within Northwest London area. The boxes are emptied regularly, and all spectacles are dispatched to Lions Clubs in various parts of the world who grade them and send them on for use in developing countries.
In late 2015 it became apparent that Lions District 105A required assistance with the Message in a Bottle Service.
The purpose of Message in a Bottle is to place a plastic bottle in fridges of the infirm and elderly and particularly
those living on their own so that emergency services can easily find the bottle which contains contact details plus
information about the medication and requirements of the individual.
The Club has taken over the administration and organization of the Message in a Bottle Service in our area and is
currently delivering supplies of the bottles to individuals.
The Club has taken responsibility for maintaining stocks of the bottles.
Each year the Greenford Lions Clubs launch their "Disaster"
appeal for areas that were affected by natural disaster anywhere in the world.
Over the years the project has grown and boxes that are packed with clothes, linen, toiletries,
and other useful items. They fill a large warehouse before being dispatched to the area.
The Club encourages people to volunteer, the club regularly organises promotion events for “silver surfers” and others,
providing youth volunteer and leadership opportunities.
Promoting the Voluntary Sector for the public benefit by associating with local authorities in a common effort
to advance education and provide facilities in the interests of social welfare, etc: making grants to charities
and supporting them in their charitable activities by liaising with other bodies and volunteers
(e.g., liaising and working with the ambulance service, fire service and police in relation to the "Message in a Bottle" scheme).
Recruiting new Lion members to support volunteering; encouraging members of the wider community to
volunteer to support Lions events and those of other charities; running events for elderly/disabled people
who might otherwise be socially isolated; providing volunteering opportunities and leadership experiences
for young people by encouraging younger people (e.g. from local schools) to get involved with fundraising
activities – although fundraising is not itself a charitable object, it is how the charity raises the funds
necessary to make grants; encouraging members as well as people generally to volunteer their time to staff events,
transport elderly or disabled people, and/or provide social activities for elderly people who might otherwise be at
risk of social isolation; providing grants to help fund voluntary projects overseas (e.g. help build a water
well or school); recruiting new members to support volunteering; organising fundraising events
and encouraging non-Lions to volunteer their time.
Relief of poverty and relief of those in need:
